Epic effort by one of EDI’s newest recruits

Sam Barham walked a staggering 96km in under 24 hours to complete the Virtual Kokoda Challenge last week.

In February this year, local young man Sam Barham started an Engineering Fabrication (Boilermaking/Welding) Apprenticeship with EDI.  We could see something special about Sam when he started with us and were very proud of Sam when he said he was going to compete in the Kokoda Challenge this year.

The Kokoda Challenge event is run by the non profit Kokoda Youth Foundation (KYF) and is “Australia’s toughest Team Trail Endurance Event” run in Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast each year.

Members of the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program (KCYP) participate in a 14 months life skills program designed for 15-17 year olds.  Central to KYF is the Spirit of Kokoda, embodying Courage, Endurance, Mateship and Sacrifice.

This year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the KYF had no choice but to cancel the 2020 Kokoda Challenges and the Kokoda Challenge Youth Programs (KCYP).  Instead they were creative enough to think of offering a “Virtual” Kokoda Challenge whereby participants could still stay fit, train and compete, while obeying the government’s COVID-19 restrictions and social distancing rules plus maintain a sense of community for the KCYP members and families.

The Kokoda Youth Foundation “support Australians by inspiring them to do extraordinary things” and donations raised go directly to local youth programs.
